AlmaLinux 8.5 For PowerPC Hardware Is Now Available
AlmaLinux is a free and open-source Linux distribution, which has been created originally by CloudLinux with the motive to provide a community-supported, production-grade enterprise operating system that is binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
The AlmaLinux OS Foundation is the non-profit distribution that oversees the community-owned and governed open source CentOS alternative. It has now announced a new stable release that includes PowerPC architecture and IBM Power System support, which brings it closer to parity with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and CentOS.
AlmaLinux has added features like support for 64 bit PowerPC architectures, which includes the release of binary and source RPMs, container images, and cloud images. All thanks to the community members and various partners, including all infrastructure support from the Oregon State University Open Source Lab and testing by researchers at CERN.
AlmaLinux has provided complete support for ARM architectures since AlmaLinux OS 8.4 and broad availability of x86 64 since AlmaLinux OS 8.3.
Jack Aboutboul, community manager for AlmaLinux said, ”The AlmaLinux community is working very hard and tirelessly just to deliver parity with RHEL and CentOS at all levels. It will provide all the former CentOS users with the obvious choice for a production-ready, drop-in replacement. We ensure to well test the most powerful popular architectures and hardware. Our vision is to look beyond the base operating system in order to provide containers and also cloud images since those are very important and utility to our users. We are currently focused to work on delivering support for S/390 and eventual full parity with RHEL. Our community couldn’t settle for anything less”.

Lance Albertson, Director of the Oregon State University Open Source Lab (OSUOSL) said, “We’re very glad and excited to empower the AlmaLinux community with access to POWER architecture for development and testing through our relationship with IBM. We are focused to provide an on-ramp to a variety of architectures for FOSS projects that also include POWER and ARM64”.
Since the launch in January 2021, the company has also released three versions that include AlmaLinux 8.5 within 48 hours of RHEL’s release, also obtained 501(c) (6) non-profit status, and secured its first Platinum sponsor Codenotary along with the OS that has received over a million of Docker pulls, among the slew of other first-year milestones.
