AWS Goes Down Again: Suffers Outage For The Third Time This Month

by Manvinder Singh December 24, 2021 0 Comment

Amazon’s cloud computing unit detected another outage yesterday, impacting several services and websites. This is the third time in the month that the cloud computing giant has experienced such an outage affecting the internet space.

In a report on its status page, AWS confirmed that the outage began on Wednesday at around 8:00 AM ET. Although, it was brought back within an hour. It suffered an outage in the U.S.-East-1 cloud region in North Virginia.

Here’s The Rundown of The Entire Incident:

Update 1: Amazon reported the incident on its status page saying, “7:39 AM ET- We are investigating increased EC2 launched failures and networking connectivity issues for some instances in a single Availability Zone (USE1-AZ4) in the US-EAST-1 Region. Other Availability Zones within the US-EAST-1 Region are not affected by this issue.

Update 2: “8:00 AM ET – We can confirm a loss of power within a single data center within a single Availability Zone (USE1-AZ4) in the US-EAST-1 Region. This is affecting availability and connectivity to EC2 instances that are part of the affected data center within the affected Availability Zone.” AWS also reported that they are also experiencing elevated RunInstance API error rates for releases within the affected Availability Zone.

However, it further said that power and connectivity in other data centers within the affected or other Availability Zones within the US-EAST-1 Region are not affected by the issue. “We continue to work to address the issue and restore power within the affected data center”, AWS added.

Update 3: 8:18 AM ET – We continue to make progress in restoring power to the affected data center within the Availability Zone (USE1-AZ4) in the US-EAST-1 Region. Customers should start seeing early signs of recovery.”

Update 4: “8:39 AM ET – We have now restored power to all instances and network devices within the affected data center and are seeing recovery for the majority of EC2 instances and EBS volumes within the affected Availability Zone.” At this time, network connectivity had also returned to normal levels.

Update 5: “9:13 AM ET – We have now restored power to all instances and network devices within the affected data center and are seeing recovery for the majority of EC2 instances and EBS volumes within the affected Availability Zone.” At this time, the company was still working towards achieving complete recovery of the system.

In its last update at 12:28 PM, AWS confirmed that it has successfully recovered all the instances and devices globally. Although, it didn’t clarify the number of users affected by the outage.

Impact Of The Outage

Websites and services, including Slack, Hulu, Asana, Epic Games Store, and Coinbase Global Inc., experienced issues because of the AWS outage.

At the beginning of this month, Amazon web services suffered a major outage, causing issues in services of major sites including Spotify, Venmo, and DoorDash. Another similar incident happened a week later impacting sites like Facebook and Hulu, which is the reason behind the disruption.
