Reliance and Nvidia Collaborate to Build Gigawatt Data Center and AI Infrastructure in India
India-based Reliance is all strapped up to build a 1 GWh (one-gigawatt hour) data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat for AI that will run Nvidia’s Blackwell GPUs.
India’s Potential in AI
In an AI event held on Thursday in Mumbai, Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, said “To elevate yourself (India) from an IT cost reduction industry, from a labour outsourcing industry to become an AI production industry, I think you have got to pursue that with all your might. Every aspect of AI, the natural resources are here. The digital economy is here… so there are lots and lots of data. You have deep understanding of computer science, computing, you have massive resources and in order to be an AI industry, to manufacture intelligence, you need energy, data and the computer science expertise. All of three exists right here.”
He believes India has the required potential to become a global AI powerhouse and can transition from a back-office IT hub to a front-office AI innovation center. Though India is yet to produce its first chip.
Partnerships with Nvidia
In September last year, Reliance and Nvidia agreed upon developing AI supercomputers in India and build large language models trained on its languages. Later that year, Nvidia announced a similar partnership with Tata Group.
India’s private companies are starting to sign contracts to build data centers that shows the growing importance of data centers and GPUs. Nvidia said Indian IT services firms including Tech Mahindra, Infosys, TCS, and Wipro are partnering up with them to train about half a million developers to design and deploy AI agents using its software.
The Indian government announced a plan to spend Rs 10,370 crore on an AI Mission, focusing on improving digital infrastructure. This infrastructure will support research and innovation in AI, machine learning and data processing. And in this picture, private companies will play as important a role as the government.
India’s future in AI
Huang sees a bright future for India due to the growing number of startups and the strong understanding of AI’s potential. He believes that AI can empower individuals regardless of their technical expertise. By making AI accessible to everyone, India can unlock new opportunities for economic and social development.
