Microsoft to invest $32bn and expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in Sweden
In the latest media report, Microsoft announced that it will invest $3.2 billion. Also, this investment is among the biggest to date in Sweden, incorporating a pledge to help train some 250,000 people with AI skills, corresponding to 2.4% of the population, which will help boost the Nordic country’s competitiveness, it further added.
Microsoft recently invest in data centers in the UK in Germany and November and Spain in February. “Also, you will see some other announcements, mostly more in the fall”, said, Microsoft President Brad Smith in an interview.
Also, Microsoft plans to deploy 20,000 of the most advanced graphics processing units, which speed up computer calculations, at its Swedish data center sites in Sandviken, Gavle, and Staffanstorp.
The race to develop generative AI programmers has led to a rise in demand for advanced chips able to support these complex applications. Microsoft said it was committed to boosting AI adoption across the Nordic region, which includes Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Denmark, in addition to Sweden.
Over three years, the company plans to train 250,000 Swedes with AI skills within organizations, schools, universities, the public sector, and society. It’s also investing in renewable energy and has procured nearly 1,000MW of renewable energy in Sweden. Furthermore, Goldman Sachs sees the AI boom as a near $ 1 trillion opportunity for the sector as tech companies invest in data centers to train their power-hungry large language models.
