Cloudflare’s Threat report Q3 2024: 6 million attacks across 330 cities
A concerning increase in Distributed Denial of Services (DDoS) attacks has been reported by Cloudflare in its Quarterly report of 2024 across 330 cities.
Cybersecurity is the biggest concern for government and all the organizations in this frequently growing digital world. Cyber- attacks and threats are continuously rising worldwide with the continuous exploitation of technologies like AI by vicious intentions.
Cloudflare, a network security provider, has reported a rise in Distributed Denial of Services (DDoS) attacks in its quarterly (Q3) report of 2024, expressing deep worry about the increasing attacks. This report analyses the network spanning of Cloudflare over 330 cities, has reported the DDoS attacks and their impact on organizations.
Cloudflare’s Threat report Q3 2024
According to Cloudflare, the Q3 2024 DDoS Threat Report, drawing from data across 330 cities, reveals attackers launched nearly 6 million Distributed Denial of Services (DDoS) attacks – coordinated efforts to overwhelm online services with traffic from multiple sources. This represents a 55% increase from the same period in 2023.
Out of those 6 million, Cloudflare’s autonomous Distributed Denial of Services (DDoS) defense systems detected and mitigated over 200 hyper-volumetric DDoS attacks exceeding rates of 3 terabits per second (Tbps) and 2 billion packets per second (Bpps). The largest attack peaked at 4.2 Tbps and lasted just a minute.
The report also reveals that 80% of HTTP DDoS attack traffic impersonated the Google Chrome browser, with specific versions (118, 119, 120, and 121) being the most common.
Targeted industries
The most targeted organizations by the Distributed Denial of Services (DDoS) were banking and financial services, which caused a significant disruption in the financial sector, followed by Information technology & services, Communication, Service providers, Crypto Currency, Gambling & Casinos, Gaming, Internet, Consumer electronics, Retail, and Civil Engineering.
China was the most targeted geography by DDoS attacks followed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Hong Kong as per Cloudflare’s Q3 2024 DDoS Threat Report. Other locations that were targeted – Singapore, Germany, Brazil, Canada, South Korea, United States, and Taiwan.
Top Source locations of Attack
Indonesia was found as the biggest source for DDoS attacks followed by Netherlands and Germany on second and third of the list. Then Argentina, Columbia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Russia, and Finland further included in the list with Ukraine on the tenth number.
Cloudflare in its Q3 2024 DDoS Threat Report said, “the report underscores a complex threat that has prompted Governments and Businesses worldwide to prioritize cybersecurity investment and develop more robust defense strategies.”
