Google Officially Removes FAQ Rich Result from Search

by Manvinder Singh May 12, 2026

Key Takeaways

  • FAQ rich results are no longer shown in Google Search for regular websites.
  • Google’s Rich Results Test support for FAQ markup and FAQ reports in Search Console is expected to end in June 2026, while related API support ends in August 2026.
  • You can still keep the FAQ schema on your site; it does not negatively affect SEO, but it will generally no longer generate FAQ rich snippets in search results.
  • It remains unclear whether the FAQ schema directly helps AI systems or search engines better understand content, though structured data may still provide semantic context.

12th May: Google has officially removed FAQ rich results from its search pages, wrapping up a gradual phase-out that began three years ago. Those expandable questions and answer boxes that used to appear directly in search results will no longer be visible.

What Happened?

FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Google Search on May 7, 2026. Google added a deprecation notice to its structured data documentation without publishing any blog post or explanation.

The Rich Results Test and FAQ report in Search Console will be removed in June 2026. Search Console API support ends in August 2026.

The removal is the final step of a year-long phase-out. In August 2023, Google had already restricted FAQ rich results to only well-known government and health websites. This latest move ends with eligibility for even those remaining sites.

What Google Document Page Says?

Despite the removal, Google’s official FAQ structured data page still describes the feature as available, stating that FAQ rich results are only available for well-known, authoritative websites that are government-focused or health-focused, available on desktop and mobile in all countries and languages. Do You Need to Remove FAQ Schema From Your Website?

No, Google has confirmed that FAQ structure data can stay on pages without causing any issues; it simply won’t generate visible results in search anymore. The FAQ schema remains a valid Schema.org type.

The Bigger Picture

The timing has drawn attention because the FAQ schema had recently been recommended as a way to help AI systems better parse website content. Google has not linked this removal to that trend and offered no further comment.

At the moment, the FAQ schema appears to have lost its visual Search benefit, but it may still provide semantic structure for crawlers and AI systems. Whether that creates any measurable SEO or AI visibility advantage remains unconfirmed.
